Atlantic Salmon - Loch Duart
Almost all Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) on the U.S. market is farm-raised. However, not all Atlantic Salmon is raised the same way or to the same standards. Loch Duart Salmon is raised in an environmentally conscious way, with ISO 14001 environmental certification and Freedom Food Certification, which certifies that the animals are provided a stress-free environment that meets physical and behavior needs. Loch Duart worked with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) to create stewardship protocols. Loch Duart Salmon is also endorsed by Greenpeace U.K.
Loch Duart Salmon is fed a custom feed that is made without the use of GMOs and with environmentally responsible fish meal and oil selected with the guidance of FishSource. The pinkish-orange color of Wild Salmon comes from carotenoids found naturally in their diet. While much farmed Atlantic Salmon use artificial dyes or pigments to achieve this color, Loch Duart Salmon does not use synthetic colorants. It also does not use antibiotics, hormones, or growth promoters.
The farms follow policies that respect and support the mission of environmental stewardship. Nets are cleaned by drying in the sun and wind instead of through the use of antifoulants. Stocking densities are low at 1.5% fish to 98.5% water. Nutrients in the water are balanced through the use of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), which raises companion species on site to enhance the natural ecology. Under this system, native sea urchins and seaweed are grown onsite which help to filter the nutrients released by the Salmon from the water. The farms also use an annual fallowing period in which one of three farms is fallowed for one year, much like crop rotation in agriculture. Learn more about Loch Duart Salmon from CleanFish.
